And, I actually liked the song too!

the piece as a whole, i don't dig. the 1st half, with the doll - blew.
wasn't serving the track any justice...look fuckin cheesey
the 2nds half, better, but....
the video simply floats on the "frantic cutting" editing
gimmick. there wasn't one single ambitious shot - just simply jittering
back & forth - which is ok, but it needs more substance to really be
affecting.
sorry to get all film school on your asses.

yeah look that was pretty bad.
The first half with the doll was so fucking cheesy it looked like a high
school students artwork. Totally not at the level of Snares himself who
overcomes any doll cliche referneces (that is his gift)
The second half would have been a better first half, and the last
25seconds are obviously the best of the whole clip (and here i'm talking
about the 'TV news' bit) but really the major problem i have it that it
was all so literal, there is no ambuguity at all, no mystery, and hence no
real interest.
Its a great song, and i take my hat off to mr snares but that video was
very weak.
p.s. I also had technical problems with the file at about 2.51min (the end
of the first half)

technically it was extremely tight and well done (good use of vid filters,
excellent beat-matching with cuts, etc).
enjoyment wise it gets an 8/10. good, but not classic and (disturbing
content aside) not something i'd show to people who aren't into idm (cunningham
vids & plaid vids are very good to show to non-idm fans). considering
that this likely cost a lot less than cunningham's 100 uk pounds, this is
great as a low-budget vid.
i actually liked the fact that the vid was almost all quick-cutting. it
established a pace and rhythm along with a surreal effect.

that video was about as deep as vsnares' tracks - pretty shallow and
fleeting.
pro(xy)
- Posted on Apr 13 2003, 09:02 PM
I really really really liked the video.
For two main reasons -
1) it has a narrative
2) the metaphor - doll vs. woman
the objectification and destruction of women in a context such as this is
ultimately terrifying. You KNOW that the doll in the first half represents
the muderer's image of the woman, with her desires being expressed through
the flash cuts.
she wants him to rape her, to torture her, to kill her. she wants him to
bury her in a bag.
The black and white imagery of the second half only highlights and
magnifies the blood, the terror of the first half. You know what's going
to happen to her. But if you look at her face as she's getting beaten and
tortured, she manages to look calm. She doesn't struggle.
It's as if she's accepting of it, almost enjoying it.
And everyone is looking for her, searching for her. Or maybe it's the
murderer(s) looking for a spot to place her body?
That's the ambiguity of the piece, and that's why I like it so much.
It is very subtle, in its way.
I really thought it was ace, and far from shallow.
Misogony caught on film is inherently interesting, anyway.

pro(xy)
- Posted on Apr 13 2003, 09:17 PM
mc spat,
things are a LOT more fun and interesting when you parse them and try to
figure out exactly what was being said and why. There's a rich underbelly
of subtext to even the simplest form of art.
I studied film (not making it, but analyzing it) quite a bit in college,
and it's really wonderful to look at them as texts instead of just having
a gut reaction to it. Music is great and wonderful, but it's hard to look
at them as a text (especially instrumental stuff) without bringing in
outside information about the artist. For example, how can you talk about
john cage's 4'33 as a piece of music? You can't, not without explaining
how it worked in its place in history. It doesn't function solely as a
text.
Maybe a better example would be to look at charles ives or aaron copeland
- how do you explain and talk about them without talking about shifting
ideas of american music and references to what was going on around them?
The beauty of their music in their references to previous american music
and their recontextualizing thereof. But they don't function alone.
whatever.
No one cares, probably.

Well, not that the creator of this reads this board ( I presume this,
since schmee has posted it ) but I'm going to email the guy a critique on
his video.
I
enjoied the begining and the final minute or two of this video.
+good source, probobly shot on digital 8 or mini DV
+editing was not poor, he did not skimp on the jumpcuts, though it's hard
to tell from a WMV file...
+this track has momvements and he didn't try to convey some sort of weird
message by manipulating the same clips for 8 minutes. He transfers enough
to keep me watching it, at least. [which is good]
+not the best liveaction I've seen, but I think it wins over the
skelechairs video :P
+some of his image trickery was top notch, using a fist clutching a
blanket in between every 5th frame
twords that ending is truely pro style, if nothing else.
His
problems lay in a few areas :
-perhaps too many cuts to the same shot in the first few minutes of the
doll (and the last minutes of "the doll." After the 200th time I
saw the blood drip from her eye I got sort of hungry, and wanted to go get
a milkshake.
-the ending lacks a steady cam :P perhaps shaking camera was an effect he
was going for.
-too much of the same clips without any filters, color changes, or
modification at all. I just couldn't get interested from the middle of the
doll sequence until he introduced whoever the girl was who was in black
and white sitting down.
-Iwould have liked to see more/different types of abuse rather one
distorted punch/slam whatever it was. Although he signified abuse
adequetely with the rapid-fire cuts.
-some of the effects he did use, such as nega-ing a scene inside whatever
building they were in with the cobblestone, then cutting back and forth
between a pan of the opposite angle again- came off as cheesey and
uninspired.
there's more but I have to go to work. I'll post his response to the email
whenever[ifever] I get one back...

I thought it was great how he kept inserting frames of Mr. Funk, as the
murderer. You never see him for more than a split second, but after
watching the entire video, you've seen enough to put the character
together. The part that fucks me up is when you see one of those split
second clips of Snares running his hands through his long hair, as if he's
getting nervous or tired from all the torture that he's up to. It's pretty
convincing that he could be a killer. Good

One word: astounded, in a good way. The video told a gruesome and tragic
story with abstract, messy, dirty, and disturbing images. This is what I
expected from Venetian Snares, showing the dirty truth and feelings of
such events. I love it. I think it is a piece of art, although many people

done and suited to the track. i wish more acts would exploit the video

Disturbed
Just came
across a link to new music video. I was pretty excited when I found out it
was from Venetian Snares. But after viewing the video I was left quite
disturbed.
I am left with more then a few questions in my head. What is Art? What are
the limits an artist should never cross? And what should be done to an
artist that has clearly cross more then a few lines?
Some times I ponder what goes thru people minds. And also leaves me with
the utter feeling of wishing to smash their skulls. The ones that have
produced this video. But then that is a reaction, something that they
where after in the first place.
Many questions to be answered. Things to be consider.
If by chance I haven't deterred you enough from watching the video then by
all means feel free to go watch it. My only words are that I in no way
agree with anything this video stands for. Nor the ones responsible for
it. It disgusts me.
It is something I am strongly against. Violence towards women.
And afterwards if you wish to comment to the producers, here is the web
site. I am still considering my words for him.
I
am sick of a world of violence
But in the end how do you rid the world of it?
Dissect
- 2003-04-16 18:11
What kind of a message
is that for a music video either? There was no real plotline to make us
care about anything at all, the shots were mainly sexual, made to make her
look "beautiful" as she was being strangled, and later, after
she was dead, for it to be very sexual.
Honestly, the director of the video kinda smudged too. I skipped ahead a
bit because seeing the same shots being replayed for about three
minutes...boring. He did really well putting the flashes in time to the
music, but that's all I can really give him credit for. What is up with
the low quality images of the ugly guy being flashed in? Ehhh, I dunno.

antzen or handsvsantzen community. it's ummmm... interesting. did you read

think you might rethink your position on the relevance of appropriate
and art. not a defense, just a speculation beyond immediate
reaction/response.

as a piece by
itself, i could take it or leave it. from a technical standpoint, the
synchronization of images and sound is quite well done. aesthetically,
nothing i haven't seen before. the key fact here is that it directly and
personally deals with and connects to the artist, or rather, his nightmare.
without that, i probably wouldn't find it compelling at all.

I heard it said once
that when you judge art, you ask yourself what was the artists intent, and
did he pull it off? I have not watched the video yet. But if his intent
was to describe a nightmare, it should be judged based on how nightmarish
he suceeded in making it.

well
this is not the best video i've seen thou ..
honestly i think it sucks a bit, i have
better imagination.
and i didn't saw YOR anywhere ... ?!
i don't need bloody images to give me
satisfaction, video killed the radiostar.
anyway, i'm not a video person. so i
don't like it unless it's really good, and compared to the music, it isn't.

yes,
blood dripping is funny
but anyway, mush and others: I would not
easily say I can do better/ of course in my head this video is like a
zillion times mo' wicked, but working it out is something else, aight!
I guess we all know the saying: talk is
CHEAP!! hehehe, so where can we check some mush-videos? knowing I already
digged this one, I'm sure yours will be da BOMB

as
matter of fact i'm busy learning video-applications...
but i wasnt talking bout 'how' the vid is
made...
i only think the idea of the video is
poor...
smashing a doll, pooring 'blood' over it,
and cutting and paste the images very fast 'mtv'-style, you would be
surprised how fast you'll obtain a result like this vid, also the music
does a lot, it makes the images look much more aggressive...
but for venetian, i would prefer a more
original scenario....

that video does
look like ass (beating of a women/doll is highly cliched/overused). the
music was ok though.

That video
still sucked, looked like parody of chris cunningham.

it's err.. well, pretty disturbing
i must admit it's well done (i esp. like the middle (rather quiet) part,
with the snowy landscape and the car), but it's rather provoking at the
same time imo

Morton, Yes that was my favourite bit (most scary too IMO).
The whole thing reminds me of the film "Kiss the Girls"

OK, didn't know it was VS, and it's fucking weird having images attached
to idm or whatever VS qualifies as

- 2003-04-15 22:35
I think technically its good. But I think its over the top. I think the
imagery is just a bit too disturbing. This new fast style of video editing
is a joy to watch but not with that sort of shit in it. I think Mr VS
might be wise not to endorse something like this.
MongoloidBaby
- 2003-04-15 23:30
It was technically crap.
Fast cuts are not that difficult to do, you look at a sound wave, you line
up the cuts... this would be much more interesting and "technically"
good if they were long shots with a lot of beat based stuff going on
within them. This kind of shit could be put together by anyone with 20
bucks, some cameras, and a teeny bit of adobe premiere knowledge.
I still like Venetian Snares, but that was a pretty mediocre music video.

i thought the video was kickin, asside from the basic lack of
content (same 35 seconds repeted for 5 minutes) its still one of the
better vids ive seen in a while.
didnt touch aphex twin's come to daddy, but still right on up there.

- 2003-04-16 00:39
I think it needs more post-production. The shots are far too clean for the
vibe they're going for. I woulda added some grain blips, maybe a rolling
v-hold like noise line on occasion. It's supposed to be dark, so make it
look like dark. Otherwise not bad. Not great, but not bad.
